When you stay with us, you contribute to responsible tourism in Cape Town. What does this mean?

Your stay is carbon-neutral
Yes, that’s right: we offset the carbon footprint of your stay by supporting high quality local carbon projects, accredited by the Credible Carbon Standard. But this is only the culmination of a rigorous carbon footprint management process, explained below. Our team includes green building specialists which apply their skills to each of our properties, helping us to do better.
Your stay creates good green jobs
We create jobs for locals and help them further their skillsets and provide livelihoods. And the carbon projects and suppliers we support create good jobs too!

Our sustainability commitments include

Carefully selecting sites and units
With criteria including:
○ Convenient location with a Walk Score of above 75, encouraging walkability.

○ Efficient centralised water heating systems to limit building energy consumption.
Accounting for our key carbon emissions
Using the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative methodology, we measure our energy, water, fuel, laundry, and travel energy consumption, as well as the associated greenhouse gas emissions. By closely monitoring these numbers, we gain valuable insights into our resource usage and environmental impact.
Actively involving our guests and staff
Contribute in shaping and refining our sustainability measures and interventions.

Our carbon footprint management journey

We address our Scope 1 (fossil fuel emissions produced directly), 2 (emissions associated with electricity used from the grid), and where possible – Scope 3 (supply chain) – emissions. We are actively working to reduce these emissions to lessen our environmental footprint.

Our community carbon project

We use high quality carbon offsets from local carbon projects that create livelihoods and good green jobs, using the Credible Carbon Standard.

The project developer of the Stellenbosch Community Recycling project, CL Waste and Scrap Metal, assists local communities and local governments in realising the virtuous cycles between human and ecological wellbeing. One of the ways in which they do this is by enabling the establishment of local recycling operations, focused on community-based waste collectors or “waste–preneurs”, schools and local businesses in the Western Cape. These waste collectors, schools and businesses collect recycling, sells it to CL Waste and Scrap Metal who then further process and trades this recycling material that would otherwise end up in a municipal landfill and water bodies. Stellenbosch Community Recycling is one such project.

Guest Engagement

Provide guests with information about local, sustainable, and walkable options for shopping, dining, exercising, public transportation, and visiting local sights and attractions. We also highlight small local businesses that are worth considering and supporting.
Engage guests who stay in our units in actively shaping our sustainability measures and interventions. We value their input and believe that their participation can contribute to ongoing improvements in our sustainability efforts.

Ecofriendly and locally sourced materials

Furnished with locally produced furniture, fittings, and tableware whenever possible. We prioritize supporting local artisans and craftsmen, reducing transportation emissions, and promoting the local economy.
Stocked with eco-friendly and locally produced guest amenities, including hand wash, body wash, shampoo, and soap. By using these products, we aim to minimize environmental impact and support local businesses that prioritize sustainable practices.

Indoor air quality optimisation

Each unit incorporates natural elements, such as plants, natural finishes, and fibres, creating a soothing and environmentally friendly ambiance for our guests.
We prioritize maximizing natural light, ventilation, and views in each unit. By doing so, we enhance the connection between our guests and the surrounding environment, while reducing the need for artificial lighting and excessive energy consumption.
All paints, coatings, adhesives, and sealants used under our control or influence are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This ensures that potentially harmful off-gassing over time is minimized, providing a healthier indoor environment for our guests.

Energy and water efficiency

We utilize efficient LED lighting throughout our accommodations.
We have implemented low flow tap fittings and/or aerators in our kitchen and bathroom basin and shower faucets. These water-saving measures are designed to ensure effective and comfortable use while conserving water.
Our accommodations are equipped with dual flush or low flush volume toilets.

Carbon footprint management

We measure our energy, water, fuel, laundry, and travel consumption, as well as the associated greenhouse gas emissions. By closely monitoring these aspects of our operations, we gain valuable insights into our resource usage and environmental impact.
